Phone scams.

Unread postby Wayne » Wed Apr 10, 2024 10:04 pm

I bumped into an old friend and his partner today and she was telling me about the call she had from a scammer pretending to be her bank's fraud department. They had her name, address, phone number and the last 4 digits of her card. She almost fell for it, but then the scammer asked her to click on a link they were about to text her. At that point the penny dropped, so she hung up. The scammer called back again and this time they decided to play with them for a little bit. "Is it the joint bank account?" she asked and was told it was. "We don't HAVE a joint account!" and hung up again. After that she gave her actual bank a ring and they confirmed no one had called her. While they were sorting things out they saw someone had attempted to make a payment using her card, so they told her they'd cancelled her card and would send her a new one out in the post. I don't know what bank she's with, but she said the actual fraud department couldn't have been more helpful. She did want to know how the scammer even had that much of her information, so I talked her through how it was most likely a leak from a site she bought something on previously. It's always good to hear stories about people who didn't fall for a scam, so I thought I'd share it here for you all to enjoy.
