Even more AI stuff. This time we play with voices.

I've been on something of an AI frenzy lately, trying out different software and websites to impersonate famous people. Here's what I've found so far. The ones that claim to be able to convert your voice into a celebrity's "on the fly" are very hit and miss. If I'm honest, they're more miss than hit. Many will tell you to try to do your best impression of the person to make it sound better, but if you can do an impression of them then why bother with the software in the first place. Just practice the impression more until you get better at it. Text to speech however can give you some excellent results. So far I've played with creating speech from people I know and famous people. You honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference with some of them, and that's really scary. We have found some ways to make it easier to spot them though. Firstly, the inflection of the voice. What I mean by that is the way a person's voice rises and drops in pitch as they talk. AI can't always get that right, and if you listen really carefully you can sometimes pick up those errors. The best way we've found so far though is to get them to either spell something (we used Mississippi in our tests) or say a place name that isn't English. Wales has some amazing place names that an outsider would struggle to say. In our tests we used the real Welsh place name of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Yes it sounds made up but it does really exist. The AI attempts to say it were quite frankly hilarious!
