Cops arrest two Nigerian men and a local woman for cheating nurse of RM1.5k

Friday, 5 Jul 2019

PETALING JAYA: Two Nigerian men and a local woman were arrested for conducting parcel scams at a condominium in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

Police arrested the trio, aged between 30 and 41, when raiding the condominium at 12.15am on Tuesday (July 2) after receiving a police report from one of their victims a day earlier.

Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Rajab Ahad Ismail said that the victim, a nurse, 22, was contacted on Facebook by the group who posed as a doctor named John Peter from the United Kingdom.

"The group befriended the nurse for two weeks and told her that they are sending her a parcel as a gift of friendship.

"The nurse then received a call from a woman, who claimed to be from a delivery company and asked the nurse to pay RM1,550 delivery fee before the parcel can be delivered," he said in a statement on Friday (July 5).

He said the nurse made the payment into a bank account before becoming suspicious.

"She then checked the Facebook account of John Peter and realised the account had been closed.

"She realised she was scammed and lodged a police report," he said.

Police also seized SIM cards, mobile phones, laptop and ATM cards during the arrest.

"We urge the public to be wary of strangers on the Internet," he said.
