State police warn of scam after theft
By The Indiana Gazette May 6, 2019 Updated 22 hrs ago

SOUTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP — State police at Indiana are warning Indiana County residents of a recent scam.

Trooper Scott J. Wagner said officers investigated a reported theft at a residence in the 4000 block of Mahoning Road on Wednesday around 10 a.m.

Wagner said a 78-year-old Smicksburg woman recently fell victim to a scam and was deceived out of $13,000.

A male suspect contacted the woman and claimed to be an attorney requesting bail money for the victim’s grandson. Wagner reported the suspect convinced the victim to mail $13,000 in cash to an address in New York City.

Police said it is a common scam that continues to occur as criminals target vulnerable members of our communities.

State police are asking people to share the information with family members and help them to identify and avoid common scams.
