(Omaha, Nebraska) The Drug Enforcement Administration urges its DEA-registered practitioners and members of the public to be cautious of telephone calls from criminals posing as DEA or other enforcement personnel threatening arrest and prosecution for supposed violations of federal drug laws or involvement in drug-trafficking activities.
Darin Thimmesch, is an Assistant Special Agent in charge of the Omaha Field Division says these criminals use fake names and badge numbers, or, alternately, names of well-known DEA or senior officials.
“Individually are randomly calling people posing as federal agents or law enforcement agents demanding people send money so they can take care of their problems they supposedly have,” said Thimmesch. “The scammers are asking for money or personal identification etc. trying to gain anything they can in an effort to make money for themselves.’
Thimmesch says the DEA will never contact practitioners or members of the public by telephone or demand money or any other form of payment. The agency will not request any personal or sensitive information over the phone. Notification of a legitimate investigation or legal action is made via official letter or in person.
