Christian County Warns Of Costly Computer Scams

Christian County authorities are warning about separate computer scams targeting area residents… including one person who transferred thousands of dollars to a scammer.

Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp says Stonington police are investigating that scam, in which a caller with a Nigerian accent convinced a victim to download software in order to receive a supposed refund. When that fake software showed a problem with the refund, the caller got the victim to transfer $24,000 to a New York bank account and to purchase $6,000 worth of gift cards and give the scammer the redemption codes. A separate scam persuaded a resident to download software giving a hacker access to the resident’s bank account… but the victim stopped the software and closed the accounts before any cash was taken.

In both cases, the scammers claimed to represent Microsoft, but authorities say the software giant never contacts customers in that way
