Constable warns of fake check scam

The staff at Compass Bank in Jasper stamped this check as "COUNTERFEIT". The bank staff said at first glance it appeared to be very real, but in reality it was very fake.

The scammer sent the check priority mail.

Jasper County Precinct 2 Constable Niles Nichols on Thursday issued a warning to area residents about a fake check scam, and how a scammer in the northwest tried to swindle a local man.

According to Nichols, Jasper resident John Evdosuk had advertised three guns for sale on a website and landed a buyer in Washington State. The buyer listed his name as “Sam Grille”, and he supposedly had a Tacoma, Washington address.

However, when Evdosuk received a check in the mail in the amount of $2,850.00, it just didn’t add up. The check was written for $1,000.00 more than the agreed upon price for the guns. Furthermore, the buyer wanted Evdosuk to cash the check and send him back the extra money.

Additionally, the check showed that it was written on the account of “The BFT Group” in Bushkill, Pennsylvania. We checked that out and discovered that the BFT Group is real, but it’s company that owns a luxury resort hotel and spa in the Poconos Mountains – not exactly the type of people who would buy used guns off of the internet.

Nichols said Evdosuk took the check to Compass Bank in Jasper where the staff took a very close look at it and they said despite appearing to be very real, it was indeed very fake.

Luckily, Nichols said Evdosuk had not yet mailed the guns to the scammer.

Nichols urged local residents to be very wary of this and other scams, and he also urged young people to be very cognizant of scams that may affect their unsuspecting older family members.
