30,000 SIM cards, 240 iPhones recovered after suspects arrested

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) have arrested four suspects linked to sim cards fraud.

Approximately 30,000 SIM cards, 240 iPhones, two laptops, two inverters and other electrical appliances were recovered.

The two female and two male suspects spent the night in police custody and are to be arraigned in court on Thursday, August 9.

Last month there was a public uproar over incidents of fraudulent SIM card swaps that saw a number of Kenyans lose money through mobile phone transactions.

The arrest comes after several other people including Safaricom employees were arrested and arraigned in court following a similar scam.

Fraudster usually makes a call pretending to be an employee of a mobile network operator.

They then ask the unsuspecting mobile subscriber to share their Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

After obtaining the PII, the fraudster then goes ahead to swap the SIM card, thereby gaining access to all the SIM services.

These include mobile money transfer, mobile and internet banking, voice calls, SMS, data services and any other service that can be accessed through the SIM card.
