Hey everyone,
So this is my first post on this site. I too fell victim to the online blackmail with adult themed webcam'ing. I would like to share my scam was like most other peoples, started talking on facebook then moved to skype. What is odd about my scammer is they friended me on facebook at least 1 month ago and never tried contacting me until the other day for the first time. (i remember it being odd her adding me since we lived in different countries and had no mutual friends, but judging by all the friends she had, pictures and wall posts i thought it was legit)
I was very paranoid and afraid because the scammer demanded 3000 euros from me within 45 min via western union. (it was already 11pm at night) Talking to the scammer i agreed to pay and said there are no open western union right now can you please wait until tomorrow to which the responded no. They showed me screenshots of all my family on FB, all of my former work place FB pages and so on. They also send many pictures/videos through skype i did NOT open in fear of it containing a virus, i was never sent a video link to youtube, but i did see what appeared to be a screenshot youtube video of me, as i said i didnt download it from skype so it was hard to see plus my mind was racing at 100mph at the time so its kind ofa blur to me now. I was so afraid this person was going to post this which at the time felt like the worst thing in the world. After an hour of me pleading with the scammer and telling them i would pay tomorrow they told me according to my location on FB there is a lot of 24 hour western unions in the city i live in (which is true). i told him to give me half hour to figure out how to get that much cash and get to one. (i really was just buying time figuring out WTF to do). I came accross this site and instantly blocked them on skype and signed out, changed me email passwords, deactivated my linkedin, facebook, instagram, snapchat and any other form of social media. i also signed up to the google alerts thing. I should also mention before i found this site/deactivated Facebook i did notice her fb page was already deleted and another one with a new name and all the same pictures had friend requested me. I did not accept or decline it before i deactivated my account, but the scammer did mention they tried to add me to prove they had 100's of FB accounts to use/scam from. i was paranoid the scammer added me and sent me the youtube link in a message that would show up in "other' inbox folder but my cousins (some of family members they screenshoted FB names of) are truly addicted to FB and check their other inbox constantly so if they havent told me anything yet (48 hours later) the scammer never sent it to them. (or there is a small small chance they havent checked the 'other' box)
Its been 48 hours since this scam and honestly i dont feel scared anymore. What i was so paranoid about was if they set up a fake facebook account with my pictures or sent it to my friends, or posted my video on my old work pages. (I should also add that i have recently moved country and started a new job and dont have ANY info regarding my new job, the company, nor was i friends with any of my new co workers before i deactivated my FB, all i had was the city i was now in) Seeing as how they were friends with me for so long before contacting me i felt they had access to more of my info on FB then a normal "add you and scam you the same day".
Reading all of the posts on here and seeing how few videos are actually posted if all steps are followed (which i did) makes me feel as though i will be ok in the end. Its obviously still much to early for a 'victory lap' but i feel if they were going to post something they would have already as i initially was scared shitless and said i would pay.
I am going to keep all of my social media de activiated for a month or so (feels so nice not to be in social media in any capacity) and will write an update in a week or so to see if any of my friends have been sent anything. One thing i can say has greatly helped me in such a short time to not be scared anymore is all of the posts on this site and this thread specifically and seeing how usually successful the outcome is when following all the steps. Regardless of my end outcome (thinking 2 weeks down the line) i just want to say go outside, see friends, have a beer, go for a run, bike ride, walk. Spend time with people who you trust and will make you laugh and it will take your mind off everything. I dont feel as though i need to talk to any of my friends about this as its not affecting me mentally. I check google 1-2 times a day( and will do for the next couple weeks) but other than this i try to not think about it and am feeling great. Positive thinking really goes a long way in accepting and moving on/forgetting what has happened. Obviously everyones personal situation is diferent, but being positive and surrounded by true friends will help almost anyone cope.
One last note to add, i do remember at one point the scammer telling me i was manipulating them by stalling and making them out to be the bad guy saying id pay extra if they waited an extra day (which they werent willing to do), he kept saying f**k you f**k you, see you in hell etc which is something i can laugh about now.
Sorry for the long rambling post, and if this not in the right section could the moderators please move it elsewhere.
