The victim arrived in our live help area last night asking for help. Parts from our conversation regarding the scammer:

I found someone who I believe scammed me. I found him via a picture match. Those are the pics I have. The gent says he is a civil engineer. I know him as Harry Johnson. What is the scam where men want you to take money from them and then Western Union somewhere in the world? The only money I spent on him was for phone calls to Africa. The check I received had a name and contact number on it. I really thought he was being honest. I believed he loved me... I cashed the check his "company" sent to me - the bank held it and I was sent the cash to someone in Africa. The bank held the check for nine days and it came thru as cashable. He stopped making any contact with me after I western unioned the money. The phone number we first starting to use to talk is a US number 707-634 4692. We continued to use that number for texts but he got an international number for talk. I now have a phone bill over $700... The last international number which still is being answered by someone is +2348184018994. I remember when he started to use this number versus the very first international number that his voice sounded different. The first number was from Bemin. The money was Western Union'd to Nigeria. I just wanted what he promised -- too much. I remember one night asking him to email me a photocopy of his passport. He went ballistic. He was always insulted that I wasn't trusting. I asked too many questions. And YET, he ended up winning anyway.

How the scam worked in this case:

The scammer posed as a successful business man, willing to help the victim with money after he found the victim had financial problems. After emailing, texting and talking at phone, when the scammer decided the victim is hooked, he told to the victim he will ask his company to send a check with the money the company need to pay for his services to the victim. The victim need to deposit the check in her bank, to widraw the money, keeping a small part for herself and sending the rest to the scammer.

Why it is this a scam, you may ask. The victim was receiving the money, not sending her own money. Well, wrong...

According to the US laws, people are allowed to deposit a check and recieve the money that day or the next. In reality, the check is not actually cleared. Sometime it takes weeks or months for the depositing bank to receive information of a fraud. The depositor will have to re-pay all money withdrawn.The bank can press charges for fraud against the victim. They can also close the bank account and report the information to other banks, making it impossible for the victim to open a new account.

The details mentioned above are just about this case. In other similar cases, the victim may receive money from other victims, being asked to re-send those money to the scammer - aware or not, the victim become an accomplice to the fraud and may end up in jail. Because the payment is made using the victim's bank account and the victim is re-sending the money to the scammer using a wirelles money transfer system, the cash can be traced to the bank's receiver. In another way of speaking, the victim receiving money and re-sending can end up in jail for fraud and money laundery and the scammer will be free to scam others using the same system...
